UNICEF South Africa has published an article entitled The Bright Kid Foundation: A true commitment to early childhood development, which takes a look at the work The Bright Kid Foundation is doing in the crucial arena of early childhood development in under-resourced communities.
From the article:
“UNICEF believes that early learning and development opportunities provide children with the best start in life and help them to grow up to be healthy, happy secure adults; and that the innovative and collaborative approach of the Bright Kid Foundation helps expand such opportunities for young children – one ECD centre container at a time.”
Bright Kid Foundation containers are converted off-site and delivered to the recipient schools. Unlike with brick buildings, building plans of containers are not examined and approved by municipalities. Agrèment is affiliated with the Department of Public Works and ensures that Bright Kid Foundation containers adhere to National Building regulations, including structural integrity, ventilation and insulation. The letter from Agrèment below explains this in detail. Bright Kid Foundation conversions are Agrèment certified. Agrèment conducts an extensive audit annually to ensure that these standards are met. Bright Kid Foundation is the only classroom container converter that is Agrèment certified
In order to comply with the requirements of all functional regulations of part A of the National Building Regulations, issued in terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act No.103 of 1977), the following are considered:
adhering to the prescriptive deemed-to-satisfy requirements provided in the relevant parts of SANS 10400.
appointing a competent person to undertake a rational design or rational assessment in terms of a relevant part of SANS 10400.
adhering to the requirements of an Agrément certificate; or appointing a competent person to reliably demonstrate, or predict with certainty, to the satisfaction of the appropriate local authority, that an adopted building solution has an equivalent or superior performance to a solution that complies with the requirements of the relevant parts of SANS 10400 (Regulation AZ4).
The above confirm that Agrément certificate is one of the options to comply with the National Building
Regulations.
